Twenty years ago Weird Al Yankovic released one of his most popular parodies, Smells Like Nirvana, which mocked the Nirvana hit Smells Like Teen Spirit. Weird Al talked to Spin about the song. At the time, his career had stalled after the failure of his movie, UHF.
He had considered doing another Michael Jackson song, but the King of Pop turned him down. Thend the music prankster, who happened to be a big fan of Nirvana and other alternative rock, caught a break when Smells Like Teen Spirit became on of the biggest songs in the world. In the interview, Weird Al discusses his first conversation with Kurt Cobain:
"He was sweet and he got it in like five seconds and said, 'Of course you can do a parody.' The famous quote from him was, 'Is it going to be a song about food?' because at that point that's primarily what I was known for. And I said, "Well, no, it's going to be a song about how nobody can understand your lyrics." And he said, 'Oh, sure, of course, that's funny.'"
The video for Weird Al's parody was quite similar to the original. They even used some of the same extras. The video is below. Vevo sucks so it may make you click to watch on Youtube. Read the entire interview.
